A breast cancer diagnosis is often unexpected and can be devastating.

A million thoughts will race through your mind, you'll be bombarded with information, and you’ll be asked to make life-changing decisions quickly. Amidst this storm of emotions it is important to take a moment to gather yourself, then get up and prepare to fight. Here are some first steps you can take.

1. UNDERSTAND YOUR DIAGNOSIS

Contact your referring doctor to discuss your breast cancer diagnosis and options for next steps. It's normal to want to push this out of your mind, but time is of the essence. The sooner you speak with your doctor, the better.

Although it's tempting, try not to ask Dr. Google what to do next. If you want to learn more about your diagnosis, check out the following reputable sources:

2. UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

After a breast cancer diagnosis, patients are often recommended to see a breast surgeon immediately. The surgeon will review your test results to recommend a course of action and options.

Insurance tip: Just because a healthcare system is accepted by your insurance, it doesn't mean the medical facility, doctor, and lab within the system will accept it, too.

Don't get stuck with unexpected bills, always check your coverage with your insurance before going to your appointment.

3. GET A SECOND OPINION

It's absolutely normal to want a second opinion if you don’t agree with or understand the course of action.

Just make sure the doctor you see and the medical facility accepts your health insurance.

4. TALK TO SOMEONE

The first couple of months after diagnosis is a very stressful time. It is important to know you don't have to fight this alone

Connect with friends and family, join a support group, or talk to a therapist or faith leader to help you cope with this challenging time.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Everyone reacts to getting a cancer diagnosis differently. Know that it is okay to have strong feelings and bad moments, and that there is help for you.
